There are several reasons that treadmills can be preferrable to running on the road/footpath: Built in cushioning systems to reduce/eliminate impact on lower body joints. You can exercise regardless of the weather or time of day. You can exercise in a heart rate zone using in-built heart-rate monitors on the treadmills. By tethering the emergency stop cord to your person, you will never be in danger of falling off and the treadmill continuing to run.
Following the steps below will help keep your treadmill functioning well: Keep your treadmill inside at all times. Regularly wipe dust off your treadmill. Adjust belt tracking to ensure your belt is centred. Silicone spray your deck (except for Bodyworx) regularly.
Size can matter. However, choosing a quality brand will ensure your treadmill has a quality motor. This is more important than a large motor.
Treadmills are extremely safe for older people. Refer to question 1 for why.
Any exercise you perform, having to support your own bodyweight, will be effective for calorie burning and cardio-vascular improvement.
